FRANK TALK LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS AUTHOR JEFF BARNES
Jeff Barnes, author of Forts of the Northern Plains and The Great
Plains Guide to Custer, will talk about the life of George Armstrong Custer
and the eighty-five identified "Custer" sites found on the Great Plains.
Barnes has spent years traveling thousands of miles to retrace Custer's routes.
His presentation will highlight the Custer legend in Kansas from the formation
of the Seventh Cavalry to the Kidder Massacre and will include information on
Custer's court martial. Frank Talk was created to honor the memory of Carol
Franklin, a former assistant director of the library. The intent of this series
is to bring authors, illustrators and other book industry professionals to the
community.

Hispanics are one of the most rapidly growing ethnic groups in America, with
a rich and diverse culture rooted in Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America.
In this series, readers will discover writers who are helping to create a new
and vibrant Latino literature in the United States. Their novels center on family
ties, particularly the universal bonds between mother and daughter, grandmother
and granddaughter, and among sisters. Readers will enjoy the unique styles,

Winter Stage - A Winter Reading Program
for High School Age and Adults
Place reading on center stage this winter by participating in our winter reading
program for adults. Prizes are awarded to those who complete four, six, and
eight items. Reading a book by or about William Shakespeare counts as two
books as does reading the 2012 Kansas Reads
title Our Boys: A Perfect

Participants may use any medium (crayon, marker, ink, computer generated, etc.) to design their entry. Bookmarks should represent the Summer Reading theme.

BUILD A SCRAPBOOK
Want to learn to scrapbook but don't know where to begin? Love to scrapbook
and want to get caught up or ahead? During each class we will create 10 themed
seasonal scrapbook pages (5 two-page layouts) and explore up-to-date paper
crafting techniques from basic to more advanced that can help you get pages
done quickly and inexpensively while still making them "pop." Completion
of all monthly classes will result in the creation of an entire year album.
What to bring: Your favorite adhesive and 20+ pictures from that month's highlighted

KANSAS OPERA HOUSES
From melodrama to Shakespeare, from church socials to high school commencements,
the opera houses of Kansas made significant contributions to the social and
cultural fabric of our state. Jane Rhoads, author of Kansas Opera Houses:
Actors & Community Events, 1865-1925 will give an overview of the development
of operas houses from plain second-story rooms to elaborate theatres, also
giving examples of how renovated opera houses are once again serving as community
cultural spaces. A tour of the C. L. Hoover Opera House will follow the presentation.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 - FILM NIGHT
For eleven seasons starting in 1989, the television series "Mystery Science
Theater 3000" ran on cable's Comedy Central, then on the Sci-Fi channel
(now Syfy), before going into syndication. The premise - Joel Robinson and
his robot friends, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, are stuck on a satellite and
forced to view bad movies. To keep sane these three use their wit and sarcasm
to mock the films. Members of the library's book discussion group, Fantastic
Realms, invite you to a viewing of the 1996 movie version of this hilarious

buys on great books in next-to-new condition will be the order of the day. The
prices are reasonable and the cause is worthy as the proceeds will be used to
support library programs and projects. Current members and anyone who joins
at the door can get first pick at the members only night on Thursday. Come all
