The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library has been chosen by the National Endowment
for the Arts to receive a Big Read grant in 2010. The Big Read is a nationwide
initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture through
local community programs that offer book discussions and activities centered
on a single book title. The title that has been chosen for the Junction City,
Geary County, and Fort Riley community is Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried,
a novel that follows a platoon of infantrymen through the jungles of Vietnam.
Companion titles for young people are The Wall by Eve Bunting and Cracker!
The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to
revitalize the role of literary reading in American popular culture. Reading
at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 NEA report, identified
a critical decline in reading for pleasure among American adults. The Big Read
addresses this issue by bringing communities together to read, discuss, and
celebrate books and writers from American and world literature.

THE VIETNAM WAR DEFINED BY THE NOVELS OF TIM O'BRIEN
Every war defines itself through the literature it produces. While the war experience
has certain common values throughout history-courage, brotherhood, struggle-each
war also has its defining distinctive features. From the war poets of World
War I through the embedded reporters of the Iraq war, the literature produced
by each conflict delineates both the common themes of combat and the distinctive
features of each specific conflict. Perhaps no writer better defined the character
of the Vietnam War than Tim O'Brien, in works like his hallucinatory novel Going
after Cacciato, the memoristic If I Die in a Combat Zone, and the
interlocked stories collected in The Things They Carried. In O'Brien's
work, the feeling of senselessness about the war, the drudgery of warfare, the
close camaraderie of men in combat, and the fragile boundary between the real
and the fantastic are woven together as defining themes for the Vietnam War.

REINTRODUCTION OF ELK TO KANSAS
Elk once thrived on the tallgrass prairie in Kansas, but they were eradicated
by settlers in the late 1800s. In 1986, Fort Riley embarked on a project to
reestablish a herd by reintroducing 12 elk to the installation. Further stocking
of the herd resulted in growth, and by 2007 the elk herd on Fort Riley numbered
125. The elk herd offers a diversion to those who like to hunt, take photographs
or just view them in the open prairie. Steve Wahle will be at the library to
talk about the natural history of elk, their successful reintroduction to Kansas,
ongoing elk management and research that is conducted on Fort Riley.

TORNADO TALES
Chapman citizen Julie Darsow wanted to help after a tornado tore through her
town on June 11, 2008. Together with her friend Verlene Jackson she began to
record memories of those affected by the disaster so that those stories could
be preserved. Ms Dawson will be at the library to share many of the collected
tales of the tornado that destroyed 60 homes, demolished schools, and changed
the face of the town forever. She'll talk about clean up, recovery, the faith,
courage and spirit of the Chapman community, and the book project. Copies of
"Tornado Tales" will be available for purchase. Proceeds from book
sales go to help finance restoration and rebuilding projects in the Chapman
